Using a MATLAB-based SPIHT algorithm in image compression

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

One of the most popular image compression algorithms is the Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) algorithm. The majority of the implementations for the SPIHT algorithm have been done in C (or C++). Recently, the SPIHT algorithm has been implemented using MATLAB making it available to students, faculty and others for teaching and research purposes. Students' familiarity with MATLAB and its accessible toolboxes make this implementation practical for utilization in a variety of applications. In this paper, one application is explored by using the MATLAB-based SPIHT algorithm in lossy/lossless region of interest coding (ROI).
