Utility of temperature programmed oxidation in characterizing solid deposition from heated jet fuels

Abstract

The carbonaceous deposits produced on different substrates from thermal decomposition of jet fuel were characterized using temperature programmed oxidation (TPO). A study was conducted to examine whether the high temperature of CO 2 peaks seen in the TPO profiles reflect the formation of less reactive deposits during thermal stressing or they result from chemical alteration of the original deposits during the TPO experiments. The reactivity of various deposits reflected by TPO, thus depended on a kinetic competition between pyrolysis and oxidation reactions. TPO was a useful technique to characterize the oxidation reactivity of carbonaceous deposits as it relates to molecular and morphological characteristics of the carbonaceous solids.
