Abstract

In this introductory excursion, Amiri Baraka's performance with David Murray at D.C. Space in the nation's capital becomes a framework for viewing the poet's entire career as a recording artist with musicians. The works performed that night were those included on the live album released as New Music New Poetry, and they are characteristic of the works Baraka composed in the decades following his abandonment of cultural nationalism and his move to Marxist ideology.
