Abstract
The development of a prototype expert system to manage the operation of coal mine ventilation systems is described. The characteristics of the mine, as they affect the expert system design are presented. The knowledge engineering aspects of this system, as well as implementation issues are examined. The paper is concluded with some observations on the requirements of a future version of the VENTILATION EXPERT.
