Abstract
We are currently studying inelastic electron tunneling using Self-Assembling Tunnel Junctions (SAT J) to determine the ultimate sensitivity and applicability of this technique to surface science. Preliminary experiments with acetylene adsorbed on tungsten and platinum yield spectra that are indicative of inelastic tunneling. We also observe Coulomb blockade effects and periodic oscillations in the junction conductance.
