Abstract

The visualization of changes over time in the positional and attribute component of spatial data is addressed by this paper. Users of (T)GIS would like to understand and analyze whole processes. Technological developments in hardware and software now allow for a new approach, but theoretical and methodological concepts to support this approach have lagged behind. In traditional GIS, maps are part of a process. They have become a starting point of a spatial analysis, which often results, via several intermediate maps, in final map presenting the outcome of the analysis. In (T)GIS the map is the process. The map becomes central to spatial data handling activities. A challenge for the cartographer is to find design rules to deal with this situation, design rules that at present are not there, and that must address interactive and dynamic maps. This paper will define the setting of the temporal map within a (T)GIS environment and discusses implications for cartographic theory. -from Authors
