Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the application of Group Technology to warehouse layout design in the healthcare industry. A cost model for a hospital warehouse has been developed to minimize annual operations cost based on the optimal grouping of medical supply items as used by nursing stations. The cost function includes two components, a cost associated with the warehouse area and a transportation cost related to retrieving items from the warehouse. The model has been applied to the warehouse layout design problem at the Milton's Hershey Medical Center of The Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
