    Abstract

An experiment was carried out to investigate the feasibility of bidirectional cross-connection using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based splitter-combiner space switches. Input dynamic range was shown to be 15 dB from -25 dBm to -10 dBm at a bit rate of 1 Gb/s with a power penalty of less than 1 dB. The results confirmed the suitability of SOAs for this application.
