Abstract
NASA's exploration mission to Mars and beyond will entail scientific and technological challenges in many areas, including development of methods to repair structures in deep space. At least four areas need to be investigated in meeting deep space-based component repair systems, including diagnostics, robotic control systems, repair technologies, and materials behavior during repair. This paper discusses the results of weld repair of various components, including the combustion liner in the Space Shuttle main engine.
