What problem are you solving?

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

In this chapter, we will identify the most critical portion of any research endeavor—the problem. A clearly identified problem sets the foundation for developing research questions that spark specific project objectives and subsequent planning for a research venture. Here we explore the scientific method, including how to define a problem, ways to stimulate research questions from the identified problem, the basics of performing a literature review, and some techniques to translate a problem into a researchable question. Focus will be placed on qualities of a strong and important research question that can be translated into a project with clear goals and measurable outcomes.
