Will commercialization of open source drive the volunteers away?

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Colin J. Neill, an associate professor of software engineering in the Great Valley Graduate School at Penn State University, provides an insight about the challenges presented by the commercialization of open source solutions from the development and commercial profit sectors. Neill talks about the entire business solutions of integrated open source products provided by SpikeSource. SpikeSource provides solutions in response to a customer question or request through its OSS community, filling the requirements gap of customers. Neill also highlights the possibility of OSS community members continuing to work for free when they see opportunist entrepreneurs making money off their labors. The Open Source Initiative, an open source advocacy group, supports the viability of open source development and the Open Source Doomsday scenario.
