Abstract
Contrary to popular thought, work measurement is not a dying science. Although, there might not be as much ongoing research focusing on the theoretical aspects of work measurement as in the 20th century, there is considerable work going on in the 21st century in advancing the practical or applied aspects, especially in the use new technology to improve and to simplify work measurement. This is occurring in all three major aspects of work measurement: 1) work sampling - the use of GPS systems to track workers on the move and the job activities being performed at various points on their routes, 2) time study - the use video recording/playback systems to identify breakpoints in work elements and to calculate standard times, and 3) predetermined time systems - the use of computer programs to assist in calculating standard times and maintaining standard data bases.
