Abstract

The hospitality industry is frequently cited as employing one of the most diverse workforces of any industry in the world. Therefore, diversity management policies and practices are center stages for researchers and hospitality professionals. Previous research has shown that diverse workforces can result in increased productivity and higher levels of overall firm performance. However, a key to realizing the benefits of diversity is understanding the policies and practices that can create an environment that fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in an organization. To assess the current state of this research we provide a review of extant literature on the topic of diversity management from an equal employment opportunity (EEO) and affirmative action (AA) perspective. We provide general definitions and findings from previous research and offer future research directions in addition to practical implications for industry professionals. Overall, our review indicates that EEO and AA are largely neglected areas of research in the hospitality and tourism industries and are topics ripe for increased study.
