Abstract

Zero-valent iron effectively dehalogenates chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminants, such as trichloroethylene. The transport of Fe nanoparticle suspensions through columns packed with sand and with the soils of different textures was studied. Unmodified iron nanoparticles were efficiently filtered by the soils tested, while anionic hydrophilic carbon or poly(acrylic acid) modified particles eluted from the same columns and had sticking coefficients as low as 0.01.
